The exhibition opens on May 22nd at the Augustinian Recollect convent in Marcilla (Navarra, Spain), taking advantage of two circumstances: the celebration in this same convent since May 18th of the 129th Chapter of the Province of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino of the Augustinian Recollects , with the presence of some thirty religious from all over the area of this Province, including the Brazilian Amazon ; and the celebration on this day of the day of Saint Rita , in which hundreds of people from the central area of Navarra come to the Recollect convent to honor the saint.

The exhibition is divided into nine chapters that attempt to provide the broadest possible overview of the reality of this mission. These are their titles and contents:

  • An impenetrable jungle : geophysical characteristics of the Amazon and the consequences of these characteristics on human beings.
  • The original peoples : the indigenous people in the Prelature of Lábrea and in the Amazon. Historical perspective and future.
  • Rubber, wealth and nightmare : the exploitation of the Amazon rainforest as a key factor that imposed the presence of non-indigenous people in very harsh conditions.
  • A new race: the ‘caboclos’ : how racial mixing in the Amazon has created a new form of society and a new culture.
  • The future: children and adolescents : childhood is one of the key factors that explain the Amazonian reality. Their vulnerabilities affect the socio-pastoral work of the mission.
  • From a popular faith to a conscious and committed faith : during the century of presence of the Augustinian Recollects, there have been different ways of doing pastoral work and living the faith.
  • A Church with an Amazonian face : In recent years, the Catholic Church has turned the Amazon into a true theological place, with a Synod and an Encyclical focused on the Amazonian ecclesial reality.
  • The Augustinian Recollect Family in the Amazon : For 100 years, the Augustinian Recollect Family has been present on the Amazonian rivers, accompanying its people.
  • Tomorrow: Sharing the Mission : Through their testimonies, some of the Augustinian Recollect missionaries bring the visitor of this exhibition closer to their own impressions, dreams, desires and circumstances.

The exhibition will be open at the Marcilla convent in the coming months.
