Assembly of the Vicariate of Mexico and Costa Rica: from synodality towards a common project

From January 5 to 8, the House of Recollection in Ahuatepec (Morelos) hosted the 27 participants of the pre-chapter assembly, 21 from Mexico and six from Costa Rica, to discern the paths of renewal, mission and pastoral reorganization.

The 2026 Assembly of the Vicariate of Mexico and Costa Rica had the advice and accompaniment of Celeste Guzmán, responsible for Youth and Vocation Ministry of the Archdiocese of Mexico.

Applying the synodal methodology of conversation in the Spirit, each day of the Assembly had the same participatory dynamic: topic presented by Guzmán, group prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, personal search for an answer to a specific question, presentation of all the answers in small groups and plenary meeting.

The topics were illuminating and provided a spiritual and pastoral framework for reflection. The group work involved deep listening, with each participant sharing their response while the others listened in silence. The groups then identified points of convergence, divergence, and potential agreements, which were ultimately brought to the plenary session.

The method encouraged very active, fraternal and spiritual participation, as every voice was valued, everyone had their moment and space to express themselves freely, and everyone was able to listen to each of those present with attention and clarity.

Each day different topics were addressed; on Monday, the current state of religious life in the morning and charismatic identity in the afternoon; on Tuesday, accompaniment in the morning and missionary identity in the afternoon; on Wednesday, the objective reality of the Vicariate of Mexico and Costa Rica; and on Thursday, the reorganization of services and ministries and the common project of life.

This pre-chapter assembly was a true exercise in synodality, where prayer, listening, and discernment marked each day; in addition, the participants were able to renew their vocational decision, rekindle their charismatic experience, and face with hope the construction of a Vicariate that is closer, more missionary, and faithful to the Gospel, a sign of hope, fraternity, and service to the Church and the People of God.
