Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes, Primate Archbishop of Mexico, held a meeting this Wednesday with His Holiness Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican. He was accompanied to the audience by Mons. Francisco Javier Acero Pérez, OAR, Auxiliary Bishop of the Primatial Archdiocese of Mexico.

During the meeting, Cardinal Aguiar Retes shared with the Holy Father the progress and journey of the synodal process taking place in the Primatial Archdiocese of Mexico. Pope Leo XIV especially appreciated the work and commitment of the priests, religious communities, pastoral agents, and laity, and encouraged them to continue strengthening this process of listening, discernment, and pastoral co-responsibility.

In this context, the Holy Father expressed his joy for the pilgrimage that the Primatial Archdiocese of Mexico will make this Saturday, January 17, to the Basilica of Guadalupe, which opens the time of pilgrimages of the year 2026 towards the Sacred House of the Morenita del Tepeyac.

Likewise, the Primate Archbishop took advantage of the meeting to reiterate to the Pope the invitation he made a few days after the conclave to visit Mexico. In response, the Holy Father expressed his gratitude and expressed his desire and interest in being in the country soon to entrust his pontificate to the Virgin of Guadalupe.

The presence of Mons. Francisco Javier Acero Pérez, Augustinian Recollect and Auxiliary Bishop of this Archdiocese, in this meeting underscores the ecclesial communion and pastoral service that the Augustinian Recollects provide to the local and universal Church.

The Primatial Archdiocese of Mexico invites all the faithful to unite in prayer for the Holy Father, for his ministry in the service of the universal Church, and for the fruits of the synodal path that they continue to travel together.
